Name: Fred Glass

What year did you graduate from STA: I graduated from STA in 1973.

After STA, you graduated from:  I went onto high school at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School and Indiana University.

Where do you live now? I currently live in Indianapolis, Indiana, only about 5 blocks from St. Thomas!

What have you been up to since STA?  I am currently the president and CEO of Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana.  Before that, between stints practicing law, I was the athletic director at Indiana University. Before going back to IU as AD, I was active in state and local government, politics, and other civic matters.

Please tell us about your family: My mother, Rosemary, and father, George, moved us into the St. Thomas Parish boundaries in 1965 so that I could go to a racially integrated school, and I have been a parishioner ever since. I’ve been married to Barbara (Lannan), from St. Andrews Parish, for 42 years, and we have four children, all of whom graduated from St. Thomas: Katie (2000); Joe (2002); Connor (2006); and George (2009). We also have five grandchildren, all of whom are also St. Thomas parishioners: Betsy; Ellie; Anna Rose; Lucy; and Eli. Lucy (2d grade) and Eli (rising pre-kindergarten) also attend St. Thomas School.

What is your favorite STA memory? When I was in 3d grade in 1968, Bobby Kennedy, who was running for president, was driving to a campaign stop when he saw us all playing on what he recognized as a Catholic school playground.  He pulled over, waded into the crowd of kids to shake hands, including mine.

What do you like to do in your spare time?  In my extra time I love to be with my family and friends.

What words of advice would you offer a current STA student? Embrace the tight-knit, caring community that continues to be St. Thomas, including the many opportunities a small, but enriching, school affords you to be involved at a high level in many various activities.  Get out of your comfort zone!

Is there any other information you would like to share about yourself (Please feel free to share any additional information about you or STA)?  Last summer, St. Thomas hosted our 50-year 8th grade reunion, and over half of my classmates came back together to reminisce and rekindle friendships.  It is a tribute to St. Thomas that after all of these years so many came so far to be together.
