STA Chess Club

Lunch Lessons with Learning Through Games: First, Aaron Dean of Learning Through Games LLC visits the school during lunchtime on Wednesdays in the fall (September 5 through until winter break) to teach chess and again in the spring (dates TBD).

Learning Through Games (LTG) started in 1996 when Aaron was a college student and started a chess program that taught kids logic and mathematics through chess.  The “Learning Through Games” method makes learning chess fun and exciting without sacrificing content.

The cost is $101 per student for the semester, and to register send this completed form with payment with your student to school.  Questions can be sent to Aaron at adean@learningthroughgames.com or 317-224-6771.

CYO Chess Team (After school): Second, Mike Chapuran (parent of two STA students) coaches our CYO Chess Team after school on Wednesday’s in the fall again for all grades and abilities.  Mike is a United States Chess Federation-certified tournament director and coach, and the founder of the Naptown Gambit Chess Club.

Practices start Wednesday, September 8, 2021 from 3:15 to 4:30pm.  The club then replaces the Wednesday practices with matches at other Catholic schools from 4:30 to approximately 6:30pm on October 13, 20, 27, November 3, and November 10.  The matches culminate in a large team tournament all day Saturday, November 13 at the CYO office downtown.

If there is interest, the free Wednesday practices will continue in the spring (though no CYO league matches with other schools occur in spring).  The cost to participate in the after school club practices is free.  The cost to participate in the CYO matches and tournament is $55/students, with a handful of “scholarships” available if requested.  Mike is willing to take your child to Aftercare after practice, and if you cannot provide transportation to the matches or tournament, carpooling is available.

To sign up (or if you have questions), email your child’s name, grade, and brief experience with chess (and any potential need for a scholarship) to Mike at chapuran@gmail.com.  If your child wants to participate in the CYO league in October-November, send them a check for $55 to the first September practice on the 8th made out to St. Thomas Aquinas School.  Note: The school chess coaches are still determining a format for matches and the large tournament in 2021 given COVID-19 risks.  Details will be shared with those registered as they are available.
