RACE & CULTURE SPEAKER SERIES PART ONE IS A SUCCESS<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Friday April 24th, the Race & Culture Committee sponsored Professor Darren Davis from Notre Dame who spoke on the topic of “Race in the Catholic Church”. It was a memorable evening with over 80 attendees. This event was a community gathering, as 50% of the participants were from STA, and 50% were from outside the parish. Refreshments were enjoyed by all, and the fellowship was genuine.<\/p>\n

People seemed to relish frank conversations around the topic of race.\u00a0 Professor Davis gave us much to ponder. He shared that much of the political climate we experience today comes from a “resentment” versus “hatred” of people of color. He shared research findings from his National Survey of African American Catholics, and his book that explores the perceptions of racism and racial experiences in the Catholic Church. Some of his findings concluded that in spite of racism in the church, many Black Catholics persist in their Catholic faith. Even if they convert to Protestant religions, their spirituality and involvement remain high. The lack of vocations have led to the closure of many Black\u00a0\u00a0 Catholic churches, forcing its members to find new church homes. Also, many African Americans have left the Catholic faith due to racism, the lack of gospel music and\/or socially relevant homilies. The information that Dr. Davis presented created much discussion, even after the evening had ended.
