PARISH COUNCIL

Brothers and Sisters, the Parish Council of STA will soon need a newly elected member.  In April, notices appeared in the bulletin and weekly newsletter soliciting nominations for this position. Three people were invited to run: Janine Bercovitz, Jose Samperio, and Charles Williams. All three accepted. After prayerful discernment, please select one as your choice for the elected seat by emailing your vote to ssperry1944@gmail.com THANK YOU!  Sharon and Cathy Bickel (cbickel@bsu.edu)  will count the votes separately to verify accuracy.

Hello, my name is Janine Bercovitz. I have been married for almost 35 years to Alan, and we have been blessed with 3 children—we have 2 daughters, ages 32 and 29 and a son, age 24.

All 3 attended Catholic grade school at St. Luke where I took an active role as a volunteer.  A Catholic education for our children was important as I attended both Catholic grade school and high school.  When Alan and I began attending St. Thomas 6 years ago, we were drawn to the closeness of the community, and we were amazed by the warm welcome we received. I am a member of the St. Thomas Welcoming Committee which gives me the opportunity to share our parish mission of inclusivity and welcoming to all. This affected Alan and me personally as Alan is Jewish.  We were blessed with the opportunity to host 2 Passover Seders at St. Thomas, allowing us to share in the great diversity that makes our parish so special. The vibrancy of St Thomas Parish is a unique treasure, and as a parish, we need to continue to foster relationships with each other and the community.  I look forward to being part of the Parish Council to help assist in this great mission. Thank you for your support.

Charles Williams has been a member of St Thomas Aquinas church since 1973. He and his wife, Robbie Williams, have two adult children, Mark and Marci Stevenson. Charles and Robbie both serve as Eucharistic Ministers and Readers. Charles was elected twice previously to the Council and served as President one year each term. He has also served on and chaired various STA Ad-Hoc Committees. Charles was an Engineer for Ameritech from 1967 until his retirement in 1991. From 1994 to 2018 he served as Executive-in-Residence / Career Mentor at Butler University. Charles’ contributions to the community include being a Board Member for the MLK-Service Center, and Board Chair for the Indianapolis Urban League, the American Cancer Society and the Morning Light-Visiting Nurses.
Jose Samperio feels humbled to be considered for a position of St. Thomas’ Parish Council.  I hope the Council finds my background a good addition to the group.  My family and I have been parishioners since 2018 and our 3 kids, Cecilia, Isabel and Louie attend STA.  I’m a strong believer in education as a way of personal growth. I hold a Bachelor’s degree and 4 Master’s Degrees and learning is a passion of mine.  Spiritually, my Catholic faith guides how I approach my relationship with the community. This is reflected in my current engagements with STA’s DEI Advisory Council, being a member of STA RCC, being a Board member for Butler Tarkington Neighborhood Association, being in the Board of Advisors for Eiteljorg Museum and being a corporate sponsor for Exodus Refugee Center.  I look forward to potentially serving on the Council. Thanks again for the Council’s considerations.
