Program goals: 1) Develop an appreciation for fitness as a fun, lifetime activity; 2) experience first-hand that consistent effort leads to improvement; 3) build a fitness foundation for fall sports and long term athletic development.
Eligibility: Kids about to begin grades 4–8. First-timers welcome!!!
Logistics: Practices are Tuesday and Thursday 6:30-7:30PM, and Saturday 8:30-9:30AM, beginning Tuesday, July 7th and continuing until the CYO cross country season begins in mid- August. Pick up and drop off is at the circle drive, Holcomb Gardens, Butler campus.
What to bring: Kids need to bring a water bottle, running shoes, and appropriate clothes. Light weight, light colored, loose fitting clothes is often best. Consider going to a specialty running store to have your child fitted for a pair of training shoes for distance running.
Other information: The summer fitness program is led by volunteers with CYO coaching experience. But we rely heavily on parent “chaperones” to run along with us. The more chaperones we have, the more groups we can split into so that kids can work out and run at their own level on a variety of courses and doing age appropriate activities.
The summer fitness program is not affiliated with CYO or IHM, nor is it a requirement for participation in fall sports. However, you will see many familiar faces. We will emphasize developing the capacity to train through activities that focus on strength, mobility, flexibility, and endurance. Workouts will be adjusted based on weather and the number of chaperones present. But use your own judgment as to whether your child should participate.
If your child is interested in participating all they have to do is show up. To assist in communicating last-minute updates to all interested people, we will use a texting service.
