Dear STA Parents,

It is now time to begin recruiting students for this year’s Band program.  At STA we offer instruction for the traditional band instruments:  Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone/Euphonium, and Percussion (Bells and Drums).  Instruction for these instruments will take place in small group rehearsals after school for the remainder of the year, with full ensemble instruction to begin when school resumes in January.

Today the students had the opportunity to play every instrument that is in the band.  Having had this experience, it is my hope that many will show an interest in furthering their musical study beyond what we cover in class during the day.  This coming Monday, October 22, 2012, at 6:00 in the Bethany room, I would like to hold a meeting for interested students and, more importantly, parents. This meeting will cover the goals and expectations of the program, as well as give the students another opportunity to play the available instruments.

Once the decision has been made about which instrument to play, arrangements will need to be made for obtaining that instrument and the supplies needed for maintaining it.  There are many steps to take in finding the right instrument.  It is recommended that you do NOT go out and immediately purchase an instrument – many used instruments are in poor playing condition, and once they are paid for they cannot be returned.  Many people in this type of situation often find themselves with an instrument that will not play and are then required to spend even more money having it repaired. Representatives from the fantastic establishment Musicians’ Repair will be present to answer any questions you have about their very affordable instrument rental program, which I highly recommend, and comes with great perks including free repair, basic accessories, and rent-to-own payment plan.

If your child is interested in joining band but did not have the opportunity to attend the instrument testing session, then please do your best to attend the meeting on the 22nd.  If you are unable to come, then please email me at, and I’ll answer any questions you may have and put you in touch with someone at Musicians’ Repair, who will be more than willing to assist you in determining the right course of action for procuring an instrument.

Many thanks,

Toby Rogers, St. Thomas Music Director
