St. Thomas Aquinas Church - Come As You Are

The School Commission is responsible for planning, policy-making, monitoring and communicating its activities and plans.  Policies are written and approved by the commission.

Monthly commission meetings are generally open. This means that interested persons are invited to attend meetings and listen, but not to participate in discussions unless they have made prior arrangements with the executive committee and have been placed on the agenda.  The Commission may also meet in executive (closed) session to discuss certain sensitive matters.

School Commission members serve for three years on a rotating basis. Over half are elected positions with the others appointed to ensure the diverse needs of the parish and school parents are represented. Each commission member serves on at least one sub-committee and most sub-committees have non-commission members as well in order to best accomplish their work. Standing committees are: Monitoring, Development, Marketing (established in 2008) and Technology (established in 2008). Membership (of the Commission) and Finance each have a commission member as leader of the associated activities. The chair of the School Commission serves on the Parish Council and the Finance commissioner serves on the Parish Finance Commission. A member of the Home and School Association Board serves on the School Commission.

As part of the School's 2008 Three Year Plan, the School Commission also set three goals.

Goal 1:

The School Commission will work collaboratively with the school staff and faculty to increase marketing efforts to the community and Parish by increasing public knowledge of the school.

Goal 2:

The School Commission will establish a Technology Committee that will work collaboratively with the school faculty & staff to assess needs for new technologies, develop goals and facilitate the acquisition of new technologies in support of the academic goals of the school.

Goal 3:

The School Commission will work collaboratively with the school staff & faculty to further assess financial needs of the institution, maintain existing and develop additional sources of income for the school as necessary.

Substantial progress has been made on these three goals through the first year.  The School Commission is also responsible for regular review of the School Handbook in consultation with the School staff and preparation of quarterly and annual reports.  The next annual report is in process and expected in early fall 2009.
