STA FEATURED MINISTRY: Boulevard Place Food Pantry

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PILLAR

The Boulevard Place Food Pantry, an affiliate of St. Vincent de Paul, provides emergency food assistance to people in need residing in the church boundaries of St. Thomas, IHM, St. Luke, St. Joan of Arc, and Christ the King.  Households living in the boundaries may shop twice a month.  The pantry also serves families living outside the boundaries on a one-time basis.  Shoppers receive between 16-25 “points” to shop (self-select) for food and personal items.  In addition, produce, bread, eggs, margarine, soap, toilet paper and overstock items are given out for no points.  The pantry is located at 4202 N. Boulevard Place, Indpls, IN 46208.   The pantry is open 8 times a week: Mon/Wed/Thus/Fri 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., Mon/Thur 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., Wed 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., and Sat 9:00 a.m. – noon.

Currently, the pantry has sufficient volunteer coverage for the 8 shifts, but shift substitutes are needed on an ongoing basis.  A shift substitute is sent a monthly volunteer calendar with open shifts and updates of volunteer needs.

In addition, the pantry needs help in the following areas:

Cardboard hauling:  The pantry does not keep a dumpster or cardboard recycling on site.  All cardboard boxes are broken down and maintained inside the pantry in a bin.  When the bin is full the contents are taken to STA’s cardboard recycling bin.

A volunteer is needed to pick up cardboard on Thursday each week (any time of day or evening), and haul it to STA.  Most vehicles or SUV’s are of sufficient size to handle the cardboard.

Stocking:  Will be responsible for stocking the shelves, client cooler, meat chests, and bread rack at the end of a shift.  Training will be provided.  Help is needed for the following shifts:

  • Monday morning from approx. 10:15 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
  • Wednesday morning from approx. 10:15 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
  • Wednesday evening from approx. 7:15 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
  • Thursday morning from approx. 10:15 – 11:30 a.m.

Stocking Coordinator:  Will be responsible for ensuring that the pantry is stocked and ready to go for each shift (8 shifts per week).  Would coordinate the teams and individuals who stock after client hours to make sure all is ready for open hours.   Responsible for inventory control and assisting the pantry director with ordering food.

5 Parish Food Donation Coordinator:  Coordinate the 5 contributing parishes’ food donations.  Would involve communicating monthly or quarterly with each parish food coordinator and the Pantry Director to ensure donation targets are being met.  Would occasionally involve helping to accept, weigh and shelve donations received on Sundays.

Repack assistance:  Each Tuesday afternoon a team goes to Second Helpings to pick up food and produce.  Many times the produce needs to be repacked and/or processed (such as repacking large bags of lettuce into family size servings).  Someone is needed to communicate directly with the Second Helpings team each week to determine if the food received needs to be repacked/processed.  The repack assistant will be responsible completing the repacking/processing.
