BOOK IT! Reading Incentive Program
October is here and so is Book It! October is Kick-off Month! A Book It! form has gone home with each student in Kindergarten and Grades 1 through 6. Please encourage all our readers to meet their goals each month! Supporting our readers is critically important.
Purpose & Goals
BOOK IT! is designed to motivate our children to read more, thereby developing their reading skills. It also makes pre-readers eager to begin reading on their own.
BOOK IT! is a family program, in that parents can help their children reach their monthly goals by reading to or with their child, discussing books, tracking completion and helping fill out reading forms. Please continue to encourage participation in BOOK IT! through your interest and praise!
How It Works
For 6 months from October through March, students are given a monthly reading goal:
- 10 books for Kindergarten;
- 15 books for Grades 1 through 3;
- 250 pages for Grade 4; and
- 300 pages for Grades 5 and 6.
Each month, students complete forms and submit them to homeroom teachers verifying the books read that month. PARENTS NEED TO SIGN THESE FORMS.
Reading Incentives (a giant “THANK YOU” to Pizza Hut!)
BOOK IT! is sponsored nationally by Pizza Hut, which supplies coupons for personal pan pizzas for each student reaching his or her monthly goal. Each month, classroom teachers will give the coupons directly to the students who meet their goals.
Another incentive STA provides is that each month the names of students in each class who complete the month’s Book It! requirements will be added to a drawing for a chance to choose one of the Library’s “Add some VROOM to your year…READ!” bulletin board toy cars.
Additionally, each month one class will be selected to have a pizza lunch with the coupons the students earn. Pizzas will be delivered to the school. No class will know which month it could be selected, so students should complete as many months as possible. Only the students who complete Book It! for the specific month selected will participate in the pizza “party” lunch that day.
Finally, at the end of the school year, a BOOK IT! Ceremony will be held where students are recognized for their participation. Students completing at least 5 of the 6 months receive a $5.00 gift card to KIDS INK. The top three readers in Grades 4 through 6 are recognized with $10.00, $15.00 and $20.00 gift certificates for KIDS INK. The top reader for the entire school will be awarded an additional $25.00 KIDS INK gift certificate. What better way to reward readers than with the opportunity to buy a new book?
Thank you for your support and participation! Those who read will succeed!
